Develop An Incentive To Join Your List

The best and most common way to capture an email and  name is to provide immediate value to your visitors.  This usually comes in the form of a free giveaway of some kind.  A coffee shop might provide a free cup of Joe.  A construction company might offer cash back.  But value does not always come in the form of discounts.  Many companies choose instead to provide information instead.  For example, a fashion website might offer a free guide to finding the best deals or the top 10 fashion trends of the year. 

TIP:  Keep it simple.  The incentive does not have to be long winded or expensive for your company to provide.  The objective is to capture their attention and provide their contact information… That's all.

Focus On Building Your List, Not Selling Your Products

The natural tendency is to focus your website on the products and services you sell.  While there are some larger retail sites that can and do focus their attention on the products, for the small business or blogger the pudding is in the follow up.  Generally, the average visitor is shopping around and will not purchase from you the first time they visit your website.  In fact, there's a good chance they are browsing other similar websites for a cheaper or more specific item.

It's one thing to capture an email and name.  It's another thing altogether maintaining that list.  If all you ever do is hit them up for a sale, chances are they'll grow tired of receiving your offers in their inbox.  Instead of always  pushing a product, send them helpful information emails.  Show them that your not just interested in profit, but that you genuinely want your clients to grow and learn.  Create content that is focused on educating your clients or have events / webinars with special guests on topics your visitors are interested in. 

Test Different Capture Forms and Content

Just because you created your incentive doesn't mean your done!  It's recommend to test several different offers and headlines to see which are the MOST successful.  This obviously can take some time and a reasonable amount of data analysis, but at the end of the day, your a business owner and this is what you do.
