You'll find there are updates all the time. The WordPress release format is 3.X.Y. The X and Y are minor updates. When the X gets to 9 that means that WordPress 4 will be released soon.
Usually with the minor updates you'll be fine with. You still want to back up your files before making changes though.
When the next major release comes out, that's when you may run into some compatibility problems with a few of your plug ins or theme your using.
How To Find The WordPress Files
Step 1: Log into your hosting account
Step 2: Launch Your File Manager
Step 3: Browse to and open your domain folder
***All the WordPress folders and files start with "wp-" prefix***
How To Backup Your WordPress Files
Step 1: Download Filezilla
Step 2: Install and Launch Filezilla
Step 3: use your host ip address or ftp://yoursite.com for the host. The username and password are the same as your hosting account log in details
Step 4: Browse to your domain folder
Step 5: Hold Shift and use your arrow keys to highlight all the files and folders
Step 6: Right click and choose the download option. This will start the download
How To Backup Your WordPress Database
The best way to back up your database is to use the dbc backup plugin. This plug in will automatically back up your WordPress database every day.
